Brancaia is a wine producer nestled in the heart of Tuscany, in the rolling hills of Chianti Classico. Founded in the 1980s by the Swiss Widmer family, Brancaia’s vineyards revel in the ideal conditions of Tuscany’s diverse terroir – and they produce some highly acclaimed wines as a result.
The winery manages three main estates: Brancaia (Castellina in Chianti), Poppi (Radda in Chianti), and Brancaia in Maremma. Each estate contributes to the distinctive character and complexity of their wines.
Brancaia is deeply committed to sustainable viticulture. They use organic farming methods, cutting out all synthetic chemicals and prioritising the health of the soil and the surrounding ecosystem. This eco-friendly approach is good for the environment, and also good for the purity and quality of the grapes.
Winemaker Barbara Widmer is now at the helm. The daughter of the original founders, Barbara first visited the vineyard in the early 1990s, and discovered her true calling. That passion and the years of expertise she has built are evident in every Brancaia bottle, and she meticulously oversees the entire winemaking process from vineyard to cellar.
Brancaia produces acclaimed Super Tuscan wines, blending traditional Italian varieties with international grapes like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and a range of whites and roses too.
And if you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Tuscany, the estate welcomes visitors – you can enjoy a guided tour and tastings, with an intimate look at their sustainable practices and the artistry behind their wines.
From the Handpicked Wine Cellars:
We love Brancaia’s Chianti Classico Riserva. Made predominantly from Sangiovese grapes, this wine has elegance, balanced acidity, and bursts with cherry, plum, and subtle spices. The soft red Tre Organic Rosso di Toscana includes three grape varieties – Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon – and comes from the three main Brancaia estates, all symbolised by the “Tre” in the title.
