Thorne & Daughters is widely acknowledged as one of the forerunners of the ‘New Wave’ wine movement in South Africa. Since 2013, John and Tasha Thorne-Seccombe have been producing innovative wines sourced from selected growers across the Western Cape. In the early 2000s, winemaking took the couple around the world, and they spent a few years in the UK, where John studied viticulture at Plumpton College while working part-time at Majestic Wines and Ridgeview. Among his early achievements on an expansive CV, John’s keen eye for vineyard design led him to establish the first vineyards at Steven Spurrier’s Bride Valley in Dorset.
Back in South Africa, a happy encounter with two similarly trailblazing young winemakers, Chris Alheit and Peter-Allan Finlayson, helped to lay the foundations for the first vintage of Thorne & Daughters. John and Tasha shared a small cellar with Chris and Peter-Allan until they later moved to rented cellar space at Gabriëlskloof, where the wines are made today.
The 2021 vintage is perfumed and elegant with aromas of rose, redcurrants and wild herbs. On the palate, fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity are coupled with well-defined notes of nutmeg and red plum.

Viviana Navarrete studied Agricultural Sciences and Winemaking at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Having always been attracted to the unique terroir and cool coastal climate of Leyda Valley, she eagerly accepted the position of Chief Winemaker at Viña Leyda in 2007, striving to produce the best cool climate wines in Chile.
Famed for being the most highly awarded cool climate coastal winery in Chile, she makes wines that are completely distinct from what we have come to expect from the country. The unique microclimate comes from both the proximity to the coast but also, the cooling nature of the Humboldt current. Where Chiles Central Valley is hot and dry, Leyda is cool and wet and it is this specific climate that brings these wines the unique freshness and balance of acidity.
Vivianna has been named one of Chile’s top ten winemakers in Decanter magazine by Peter Richards and is considered “one of Chile’s best Pinot Noir makers” by Kim Marcus of Wine Spectator. In 2018, she was acknowledged by Wine Enthusiast as one of the wine industry’s top trialblazing women, and last year she was crowned winemaker of the year 2020 by Tim Atkin.
