The origins of Carmenère stem from Bordeaux, where it was once a prominent red grape variety. However, it nearly disappeared in the 19th century due to the phylloxera epidemic that devastated many European vineyards.
For years, Carmenère was thought to have vanished entirely, yet in the 1990s, Chilean winemakers made a surprising discovery—what they had been growing as Merlot was actually Carmenère!
Often referred to as “The Lost Grape of Bordeaux,” Carmenère thrives in Chile’s climate, and its deep colour, rich flavour, spicy character, and distinctive notes of green pepper and tobacco make it a welcome addition to the country’s wine offering.
