The name Kaiken is taken from a type of Patagonian wild goose, famous for their migration over the mountains from Chile to Argentina. When Aurelio Montes made the same journey, it seemed appropriate to name his new winery after the geese, that he had emulated.
The Ultra range is a cut above the Kaiken Clásico and Kaiken Terroir wines. As well as the Malbec, Kaiken Ultra also features a Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Merlot.
The Kaiken Ultra Malbec features grapes from 3 high altitude vineyards in the Uco Valley, Vistaflores (1400 metres), Gualtallary (1300 metres) and Altamira (1100 metres). The variation in altitudes provide different characteristics in the grapes leading to a complex and interesting wine. The soils at the three vineyards are similar. Featuring sand and silt on top of layers of rock that promote good drainage, leading to highly concentrated fruit packed with flavour. The juice from the handpicked and sorted grapes spends 12 months in French oak barrels after fermentation. This all helps to deliver a deep ruby red wine, that is spicy on the nose, has a structured palate with soft tannins and brimming with hints of blueberry and blackberry. It’s an exceptional wine that won Gold at the 2020 Sommelier Wine Awards.
