Fontanafredda

Fontanafredda’s high-calibre wines reflect the unique terroir of the Langhe region in Piedmont, and they’ve earned global renown as a leading wine producer – and that is cemented by their dedication to excellence and respect for tradition.

Fontanafredda’s rich history dates back to its foundation in 1858 by Count Emanuele Alberto di Mirafiori, the son of King Vittorio Emanuele II of Sardinia. The estate originally served as hunting grounds before evolving into a prestigious vineyard, recognised for producing some of the finest Barolo (often referred to as the “king of wines”).

Spanning over 250 acres, Fontanafredda’s vineyards are planted with a variety of grapes, including Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Moscato, Chardonnay. The diverse soil composition, ranging from chalky to clay-rich, contributes to the unique characteristics of the wines it produces. The estate is committed to sustainable and organic farming practices, ensuring that no chemicals are used in the vineyards.

Fontanafredda’s winemaking facilities include historic 19th-century cellars with oak casks, and modern stainless steel vats, which are used for ageing red wines and producing white and sparkling wines. This blend of tradition and innovation allows the winery to maintain the distinct identity and quality of its wines, while meeting the demands of modern standards and practices too.

In addition to its winemaking prowess, Fontanafredda offers a comprehensive wine tourism experience. The estate features a boutique hotel, Foresteria delle Vigne, set in the midst of the  picturesque Barolo Hills. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the historical cellars, wine tastings, and food pairings: an immersive experience for fully appreciating the rich heritage and exceptional quality of Fontanafredda wines.

From the Handpicked Wine Box cellars:

We recommend the Barolo di Serralunga d’Alba DOCG – it’s full-bodied, velvety and intense.
The Briccotondo Arneis Langhe DOC is a soft and delicious white, and makes the perfect aperitif.
