Castarède

Armagnac, the oldest brandy distilled in France, traces its roots back over 700 years and is renowned for crafting exquisite brandies in the beautiful rolling hills of Gascony.
Castarède was founded in 1832, it’s still owned by the same family – now in its sixth generation, with Florence Castarède at the helm.

Their production process begins with carefully selected grape varieties, primarily Ugni Blanc, Baco, and Folle Blanche, grown in the unique terroir of Gascony. The region’s sandy, clay, and limestone soils, combined with a mild climate, provide ideal conditions for cultivating grapes that are perfect for distillation.

Distillation at Domaine Castarède is done using a traditional continuous still, known as an “alambic Armagnacais.” This method, distinct from the pot stills used in other brandy regions, allows for a slow and gentle distillation that captures the full essence of the grapes. The result is a spirit with a rich, complex character and a depth of flavour that is truly unique.

Aging is another crucial aspect of Armagnac production. The brandy is matured in local oak barrels –local Gascogne legend states that the casks should be made from oaks that have watched the vines grow – and this is where it slowly develops its signature smoothness and aromatic complexity. Each barrel is carefully monitored to ensure the perfect balance of flavours, with notes of dried fruit, vanilla, and spices emerging over time. Some of their finest Armagnacs are aged for decades, resulting in a luxurious, velvety spirit that is highly prized by connoisseurs.
