Let’s take a scenic trip to Man O’War, a wine producer situated on the stunning Waiheke Island, in New Zealand. This picturesque vineyard is known for its unique blend of history, beauty, and exceptional wines – and its stunning location, right on the beach.
Man O’War’s name is inspired by the historic Man O’War warships, whose masts were made from the magnificent Kauri trees that grow on the land. The land itself is steeped in history that goes back centuries to Polynesian adventurers. These lush, rolling hills on Waiheke Island are now the home of this renowned vineyard – and its unique maritime climate, with its warm summers and cooling sea breezes, creates the perfect conditions for growing a wide array of grapes, from bold reds to crisp whites. The first vines were planted in 1993, and today there are 75 vineyards across the farmland, forming part of the 4500-acre family farm and beach.
Visiting Man O’War is a real treat. The vineyard’s cellar door is located on a beautiful beachfront, and offers an incredible setting to savour their wines -as well as an exquisite Sunday Roast dining menu, which includes produce from their orchards, olive groves, restored native forests and beehives, and livestock as well. It’s a true farm-to-table experience at Man O’War.
From the Handpicked Wine Cellars:
We recommend the Man O’War Island Blend (its our go-to on a Friday night with steak), which combines Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot varieties. Their Sauvignon Blanc is a wine with lovely texture, weight, balance and finesse.
