On the palate, it is powerful yet refined – warm, dry and concentrated with flavours of sour cherry, sultana and spice. Its soft tannins and bright acidity make it a polished, food-friendly red.

I chose this pair because they really capture the contrast that makes Italian red wines so exciting. The Curatolo Arini Nero d’Avola is a wonderful expression of Sicily – it’s generous, fruity and full of life, yet beautifully balanced by that freshness you only get from higher-altitude vineyards. It’s a red I reach for when I want something smooth but with character.

The Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore is quite different – richer, deeper and more complex, with those raisined notes that make Ripasso such a rewarding style. It’s indulgent without being heavy, the sort of wine that works just as well on its own as it does alongside a slow-cooked dish.
