Tuscany red blend Pomino by Villa di Petrognano with rich fruit and lively acidity.

About This Wine

The Wine

Villa di Petrognano's Pomino is a red wine blend from the Pomino area in Tuscany, combining Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The vineyard was planted between 2006 and 2007 on stony, well-drained Galestro soils at about 450 meters altitude. The vines are farmed organically, and the grapes are hand harvested. The wine undergoes fermentation with natural yeasts in stainless steel vats and is aged 18 months in French oak containers before a further 6 months in bottle. This method preserves the distinct character and complexity of the blend.

The Pomino blend reflects the history of French grape varieties in this Tuscan region dating back to the 1850s. It distinguishes itself within Tuscany for rich fruit and balanced acidity, offering a rounded palate with supple tannins and blackcurrant fruit from the Bordeaux varieties alongside lively Sangiovese acidity.

Villa di Petrognano

Francesco Giuntini of the Selvapiana winery first began renting Villa di Petrognano in Pomino in 1993. Francesco’s son, Federico Giuntini Masseti, is now at the winemaking helm, continuing the great work of the late Franco Bernabei, who was winemaking consultant.

Villa di Petrognano blends Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to create characterful wines distinct from other red wines in Tuscany. The use of French varieties in Pomino dates back to the 1850s, when Vittorio degli Albizi returned from France to Tuscany, bringing back cuttings from his favourite French vines.

Terroir

The vineyards are situated on the foothills of the Apennines, planted in stony Galestro soils which provide good drainage and stress to the vines, promoting concentrated flavours. The south to southwest exposure and elevation of around 450 meters contribute to the freshness and balance in the wine.
