1er Cru Damodes | Joseph Drouhin | Pinot Noir | Nuits-Saint-Georges | France
Red Wine | 14%
At the heart of the Côte de Nuits, the town of Nuits has its own Hospices, world-renowned vineyards and, of course, ancient traditions. The Premier Cru Damodes is located in the north part of the Nuits-Saint-Georges vineyard, above the “Boudots”, near Vosne-Romanée, with an east exposure. The vineyard is planted on on clay mixed with limestone pebbles, this area produces wines of great finesse. Vine density of 10,000 vinestocks/ha in order to extract as much as possible from the terroir and limit the production of each vine stock. Yields of 40 hl/ha – purposely low, in order for the grapes to reveal every nuance of the terroir. History & tradition: the name “Nuits” may come from “noyer” (walnut tree), a not very frequent tree in this region. As a matter of fact, the hillsides in Burgundy were covered with oak trees at the time the Romans arrived. “Damodes” might evoke a divine feminine trinity protecting earthly fruit.
Powerful, elegant Burgundy, fragrant with cedar and juicy with cherries and blackberries, with a hint of sweet spice on the finish.
Melville Estate | Pinot Noir | Santa Rita Hills | USA
Red Wine | 14%
A collection of 16 pinot noir clones from across Melville’s Sta. Rita Hills estate, this is a perfect example of the best that the region can produce. 40% of the fruit was fermented as whole-clusters with 60% gently destemmed in small (1.5 ton) open-top fermenters. Total skin and stem contact averaged 30 days (7 day cold soak, 2 + weeks of fermentation and 1 + week extended maceration). From the press, the wine was transferred directly into neutral barrel (10+ year old French oak), where it remained sur lie without sulphur until June, when it was gently racked for the first time and prepared for bottling in August.
Light garnet in colour, vivid aromatics of rhubarb, tangerine zest, fresh cranberry and juniper are immediately apparent while intriguing notes of eucalyptus, chanterelle mushroom, plum skin and green tea linger in the background. Focused and precise, with velvety tannins that frame the wines plush core as well as the lengthy and cohesive finish.
