Over fifty years ago, Jerry Lohr embarked on a career change and was one of the first to realise the potential of a brand-new wine growing region in the Central Coast. Having been raised on a South Dakota farm, he was blessed with a sense of agricultural instinct when it came to searching for the ideal location for his first vineyard. Combined with extensive research, his decade long search led him to Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco where its cool, windy climate and rocky soils are ideal for growing Chardonnay. “Arroyo Seco” meaning dry river in Spanish, is a small appellation nestled between the flatlands and the higher reaches of the Santa Lucia mountains.
J Lohr continues to be family owned and operated with Jerry at the helm, working side by side with his children and vineyard sustainability is at the heart of everything they do.

Aromas of cherry, cassis, and cherry with hints of light oak and vanilla coming through from the influence of ageing in American oak barrels. I also pick up some notes of coffee and cocoa. The palate is bold and fruit forwards; plums and blackfruits with hints of pepper and underpinned by grippy tannins. Approachable and hugely enjoyable.

Located in the Stags Leap district of Napa Valley and historic winner of the Cabernet Sauvignon competition at the 1976 Judgement of Paris where the winery achieved international recognition by winning 1st place in a blind tasting of 10 top French and California red wines, including prestigious first and second growths. The significance of the result was described as “a victory that put California on the winemaking map, and established Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars as a global superstar” by Decanter magazine. They then went on to achieve 2nd place in ‘The Judgment of Paris’ 30th Anniversary tasting with the same wines and vintages tasted at the original Judgment of Paris competition. This charming and delicious wine, reminiscent of a Saint-Julien Bordeaux from a favourable vintage, is crammed with black cherries and blueberries on the nose. Aromas of spice, vanilla and clove develop, which are reflected in the palate. The palate is refined and elegant with a balanced acidity, fine tannins and wonderful length.
