Amphorae are ancient clay vessels historically used for the storage and transportation of wine and other goods. In modern winemaking, amphorae are employed for fermenting and aging wine, offering a unique alternative to traditional oak barrels or stainless steel tanks. Wines aged in amphorae are said to benefit from the clay’s micro-oxygenation properties, similar to oak, but without imparting additional flavours to the wine, allowing for a purer expression of the grape and its terroir.
