Full-bodied Franschhoek Cabernet Franc by Great Heart with fresh herbs and blackcurrant notes.

About This Wine

The Wine

Great Heart is a staff empowerment project owned by the workers of Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, guided by mentors Chris and Andrea Mullineux. The winemaking team follows sustainable practices and minimal intervention to produce wines that focus on single sites and natural fruit intensity. This Cabernet Franc is sourced from vines grown on deep, loam-rich soils on the lower eastern slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains. The site and winemaking result in a wine fragrant with fynbos, blackcurrant, and mint leaf, supported by fine tannins and a balanced structure. The 2022 vintage saw careful vineyard management due to varied ripening patterns and heat spikes, leading to ripe grapes with moderate alcohol and good texture.

The Producer

The Great Heart Wine Company is the vision of Andrea & Chris Mullineux, to realise a mechanism for equity and meaningful transformation through fantastic wine and inspirational vineyards. They are committed to sustainable and ethical farming to preserve the natural environment and well-being of their communities. Established in 2020, Great Heart Wines is a winery 100% owned and run by the employees of both the Mullineux and Leeu Passant wineries who directly profit from the wine sales and see the shareholders involved in all the stages of the viticulture and winemaking. Great Heart winemaker Gynore Hendricks, a graduate of the Cape Winemaker’s Guild Protege Program, works in the winery with vineyards hailing from the Swartland, Stellenbosch and Ceres, resulting in wines that have a beautiful natural intensity, complexity, and a true sense of place.

Terroir

Vines are planted on deep, loam-rich soils on the lower eastern slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains, in a region with a Mediterranean climate moderated by mountain influences. The site offers good drainage and supports healthy vine growth producing fruit with natural vibrancy.
