Red Côte-Rôtie from Yves Cuilleron blending Syrah and Viognier with spicy black fruit and rich texture.

About This Wine

The Wine

La Madinière is crafted from Syrah grapes, with a small percentage of Viognier added, sourced from parcels located on schist soils in the northern part of Côte-Rôtie. The wine undergoes a traditional fermentation with natural yeasts in open tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels and is aged for over 20 months in new oak barrels. This careful process imparts spicy black fruit aromas and a rich, concentrated palate.

The wine balances fresh acidity and firm tannins, making it approachable in youth but also capable of ageing gracefully for a decade or more. It pairs well with various dishes including lamb, beef, and game, reflecting the classic style of this northern Rhône appellation.

Produced by Yves Cuilleron, a respected winemaker known for his attention to terroir and traditional methods, La Madinière highlights both power and finesse characteristic of Côte-Rôtie reds.

Tasting Notes

On the Nose

The wine shows dense blackberry fruit with spicy, peppery notes typical of Syrah, alongside woody scents reminiscent of a dense forest and subtle compote of dark fruits.

On the Palate

On the palate, it is fresh and ample, with a charnue (fleshy) texture. The balance between fruit and tannin is well maintained, offering richness without heaviness and a clean finish.

Yves Cuilleron

Founder Yves Cuilleron is a superstar in the Northern Rhône wine scene. Based in the village of Chavanay, his family-run winery has been making waves for generations, but Yves really took things to the next level when he took over in 1987. Since then, he’s become one of the top winemakers in the region, and his wines are known as much for their personality as their quality.

Yves Cuilleron’s vineyards stretch across some of the most prestigious appellations in the Northern Rhône, including Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, and Crozes-Hermitage. While he makes a variety of wines, he’s especially famous for his whites from Condrieu (from Viognier grapes) and his powerful reds from Côte-Rôtie (Syrah).

Yves Cuilleron believes in the hands-on approach, and has never tried to fit into conventions or follow viticultural fads. His focus has always been about growing the best grapes possible, and he does that the old-school way, with manual treatment of the vines, hand-harvesting, and being deeply involved in every step of the winemaking process. In the cellar he uses natural yeasts, and carefully controls fermentations to bring out the best of each grape and the terroir.

Yves Cuilleron is a name to know among Rhône wines. His wines are consistently fantastic and offer a true taste of the region’s best.

From the Handpicked Wine Box Cellars:

Every Yves Cuilleron wine is full of character. Les Vignes d’à Côté IGP Collines Rhodanienne is a Viognier – rich and aromatic, bursting with fruits and floral notes. On the red side, Les Pierres Sèches is structured, spicy, and loaded with dark fruit.
