Charles Melton

This well-loved wine producer in the Barossa Valley, Australia, is known for crafting bold and expressive wines – especially reds. Charles moved to the valley from Sydney in 1974, and was apprenticed to another giant of the industry: Peter Lehmann. This time taught him much about the region’s conditions, fruit and wine production as a whole, and Charles established his own winery in the 1980s. It quickly gained a reputation for its old-vine Shiraz and Grenache blends, bringing a modern touch to the traditional wines of the region.

Charles Melton focus on small-batch, high-quality wines. They source grapes from some of the best vineyards in the Barossa, including old vines that have been around for generations – and all the vines are hand-picked, which is vital for the health of older plants. These old vines produce lower yields but deliver incredibly rich, concentrated flavours, which is what gives their wines that extra depth and complexity.

Whether you’re already a fan of big Aussie reds or just looking to try something new, Charles Melton wines are perfect for sharing with friends over a meal or for those nights when you want to sip something special. They’re all about capturing the spirit of the Barossa, and making wine that’s delicious, memorable, and made with passion.

From the Handpicked Wine Cellars:

One of their standout wines is the “Nine Popes,” in the tradition of the classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape style from France. It’s a blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre that’s packed with bold fruit flavours, spice, and oak.
