Iona

Iona is a cool-climate wine producer nestled in the picturesque Elgin Valley of South Africa. Founder Andrew Gunn stumbled upon the breathtaking farm in 1997 – and enchanted by its beauty and potential, he transformed it into a vineyard.

Located high up in the mountains, Iona benefits from cool sea breezes and a longer growing season, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex flavours: the sugar, pH, acid and flavour compounds are in perfect balance. This ideal climate, combined with meticulous vineyard management, results in wines with exceptional freshness and finesse. The health of the soil is paramount, and their traditional practices support that – including the use of their resident flock of geese for keeping pests under control!

The name “Iona” was inspired by the remote Scottish island, in deference to Andrew’s Scottish grandfather, and symbolising the tranquillity and remote beauty of the area. The longboat in their branding is a further nod to the past: the family lineage can be traced right back to the Vikings.

Andrew and his team are committed to nurturing for generations to come – and their wines encapsulate stunning scenery, rare South African cool-climate terroir, thoughtful winemaking, and a respect for history and where you come from.

From the Handpicked Wine Box Cellars:

Iona’s portfolio includes a variety of superb wines, but they are especially celebrated for their Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Their Sauvignon Blanc is often described as vibrant and zesty, bursting with citrus and tropical fruit notes. The Elgin Highlands Chardonnay is full of bright citrus flavours, white stone fruit, oyster shell minerality and a hint of brioche.

We also love the Sophie te’Blanche – named after a nickname given to Sauvignon Blanc by workers who struggled to pronounce it!
