Crasto is a well-known, family-run winery nestled in the heart of Portugal’s stunning Douro Valley, where they’ve been making exceptional wines for over a century – although the first record mentioning Quinto do Crasto goes back to 1615. The winery has been passed down through generations, and today it’s one of the leading names in Portuguese wine. It’s famous for both its delicious table wines and its world-class Ports.
The Douro Valley is home to some of the world’s most breathtaking vineyard landscapes, and Crasto enjoys some of the best of them. They work with traditional grape varieties like Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca, many of which come from old, terraced vines that produce deep and complex wines.
Crasto is also part of global food and wine production history: between 1758 and 1761, the Marquis of Pombal commissioned the placement of 335 granite markers to define the world’s first Demarcated Region. One of these stone pillars, known as “marcos pombalinos” in Portuguese, dates back to 1758 and can still be seen today at Quinta do Crasto, near the 100-year-old farmhouse.
Crasto have been around for a long time, and they’re still evolving and innovating. They’ve kept the family vibe, and their wines are approachable and sophisticated at the same time, making them a great option for both everyday drinking and special occasions.
From the Handpicked Wine Cellars:
One of Crasto’s standouts is their “Quinta do Crasto” red blend, a rich Port that reflects the best of what Douro grapes have to offer; while the Superior Syrah is a delicious blend of fresh berry fruit flavours and chocolate.
