Description
El Lebrero is a beautifully made white from Ribera del Duero that shows just how compelling Albillo can be when handled with care. This is not a light, simple white. It has depth, texture and a real sense of place.
In the glass, it’s bright and golden. The nose is expressive, with ripe orchard and exotic fruit, white blossom and a gentle hint of fennel. There’s a chalky, mineral edge running through it, giving lift and precision. On the palate, it’s broad and layered, balancing richness with freshness. Notes of citrus peel and subtle spice build into a long, savoury finish with a lightly saline, almost nutty complexity.
This is a wine with structure as well as flavour, shaped by high-altitude vineyards and thoughtful winemaking. Fermented with native yeasts in a mix of French oak and concrete, then aged on its lees, it gains texture and depth without losing clarity. Everything feels deliberate and well judged.
Bodegas Félix Callejo is a family-run estate on the northern edge of Ribera del Duero, working organically across a patchwork of small plots. Their focus is on letting each site speak, and that comes through here. There’s a quiet confidence to the wine, with purity, balance and a strong mineral backbone.
At the table, it’s versatile but particularly good with dishes that have both richness and finesse. Think grilled monkfish, turbot in a buttery sauce, roast guinea fowl or even something like salt-baked celeriac. It also pairs well with aged cheeses, where its texture and savoury edge really come into their own.
A serious, characterful white that offers something a bit different, and well worth exploring if you enjoy textured, food-friendly wines.
