Portuguese Castelão is a red grape variety that is widely grown across Portugal, particularly in the Península de Setúbal region. Known for its resilience in dry conditions, Castelão produces wines that are robust and full-bodied. On the palate, these wines often showcase flavours of red berries and plums, often complemented by a note of leather and a touch of herbaceousness. Wines made from Castelão are well-structured with medium to high tannins, and they have good ageing potential. Despite being sometimes overlooked in favour of Portugal's more prestigious grape varieties, Castelão offers a uniquely Portuguese wine experience.
