Charles Heidsieck is the smallest of the Grandes Marques Champagne producers – and it’s world-renowned for its exceptional quality, rich history, and the charismatic founder who brought this house to life.
Charles Heidsieck was founded in 1851 by the dashing and entrepreneurial Charles-Camille Heidsieck, affectionately known as “Champagne Charlie.” His charm and business acumen quickly established the brand as a symbol of sophistication and excellence. Notably, Charles was one of the first to introduce Champagne to the American market, making a splash with his elegant bubbly and earning a place in the hearts of Champagne lovers worldwide.
Over the years Charles Heidsieck’s talented producers have won accolades over and over again, including Sparkling Wine Maker of the Year and the International Wine Challenge an incredible 16 times – no other house has won this more than twice.
Located in Reims, the heart of the Champagne region, Charles Heidsieck’s cellars are an integral part of its charm. These cellars, or “crayères,” are ancient chalk caves dating back to the Roman era, providing the perfect environment for aging their exquisite Champagnes. The cool, consistent temperature and humidity levels in these caves allow the wines to develop their distinctive character and complexity over time.
Charles Heidsieck is renowned for its use of a high proportion of reserve wines, which are aged for many years before blending. This practice lends a depth and richness to their Champagnes, setting them apart from others.
Visiting Charles Heidsieck is a delightful journey into the world of Champagne. The guided tours of their historic cellars and the tasting sessions offer a deep dive into the artistry and dedication that define this remarkable house, celebrating the magic of Champagne Charlie and the legacy he left behind.
