Thistledown Wine is a premium wine producer based in Australia, renowned for its commitment to crafting exceptional wines with a hand-made, small batch approach.
Founded by Giles Cooke MW and Fergal Tynan MW in 2010, they source their grapes chiefly from South Australia’s renowned wine regions, including McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, and Adelaide Hills. These regions are well known for their diverse climates and soils, and Thistledown deliberately choose growers whose grapes offer balance, great varietal range and an expression of where they come from – all of which contribute to the complexity and distinctiveness of their wines.
Thistledown Wine has gained recognition for its elegant and balanced wines, which often receive high scores from wine critics and accolades in wine competitions. The wines are characterised by their purity of fruit, refined tannins, and vibrant acidity, making them highly desirable to wine enthusiasts and collectors alike.
Innovation and experimentation are also key aspects of Thistledown’s approach – they are always exploring new techniques and blends to enhance their offerings, keeping their wines fresh and exciting. Their wines are celebrated not just for their taste, but also for the story they tell about the land, and the care taken in their production.
From the Handpicked Wine Cellars:
Thistledown Wine is particularly noted for its exceptional Shiraz and Grenache, which are crafted with meticulous attention to detail – and we are delighted to carry a selection of these at Handpicked Wine Box. We highly recommend the She’s Electric Single Vineyard Old Vine Grenache – so named because apparently, half of the Grenache vines burned when a bird hit a power line, fell to the ground and set light to the vineyard! Much younger vines were planted to replace them, and this wine is made from the older originals.
The Cunning Plan Shiraz is one of their hand-made, small batch wines – a perfect example of their wine-making ethos in a bottle.
