Description
An historic estate in the Saint-Émilion appellation, Château Gros Caillou, located just a short distance from the UNESCO World Heritage-listed town, was taken over in 2017 by Jean-François Fonteneau. Under the direction of its new owner, who brings successful experience from other wine regions, the estate is currently undergoing significant transformation.
The estate’s prime location endows it with a distinctive character and typicity, preserving its authenticity to bring out the best of this exceptional terroir. With a commitment to sustainable practices for people and the planet, Château Gros Caillou naturally began a conversion to organic farming in 2018.
The Gros Caillou vines thrive on a renowned, ideally-suited terroir, rich and characteristic of the Saint-Émilion appellation. Some vines, over 40 years old, send their roots deep into the soil, drawing the essence needed for a balanced, characterful wine.
The gravelly soils mixed with sand reveal the finesse of the Cabernet Franc each day, enhancing the generosity, complexity, and freshness of the Merlot on their preferred land.
An intense nose of red fruits. On the palate, the red fruits evolve into spicy notes with a woody finish. A balanced and elegant wine.
