Winemaker Elias Lopez was recently voted as one of Spain’s top ten Winemakers to watch and wow, what a wine! Mazuelo is better known as Carignan and as a later-ripening grape variety, that copes with heat and drought, Elias has realised his goal of producing award-winning, organic and ‘future-proofed’ wines that will continue to thrive in a region that is already incredibly hot and arid.
Using ancient winemaking techniques such as amphora, Elias also choses not to clarify or filter these boutique wines to protect as much of the character as possible. Sulphur additions are also minimal.
I can’t rate this wine highly enough; red fruits, plums, and coconut on the nose underlined by notes of balsamic and dried herbs. The palate is seductive, complex and intense, rich and smooth. An impressive structure with a mineral backbone and plenty of acidity, fine tannins and a notable finish.
